Redefining Local Street Art
about
Project Statement
Phoenix boasts of having an array of over 80 individual street art murals from a variety of local artists and talents. Yet, when the general population finds its way on Roosevelt Row for art related events, such as First and Third Fridays, they often disregard these magnificently painted walls as part of the exhibited art work. However, street art, like the murals downtown, not only add character to the cityscape, but also redefine every parameter of the word “art” in their scale, medium, and presentation. In this exhibition, we want to be able to bring forward only a small section of the local street art that Phoenix has to offer in a hope to present these works as more than graffiti, but rather as art installations in their own right. Through this traditional form of presenting unorthodox works, we are working to cast a light on these often anonymous works and artists, as well as present a new definition to what many people have already defined as “art.”

“Consciously or unconsciously, graffiti artists think of art as theatre. We were doing our art in public with a time limit. Even if it’s at night with no one around, you felt like people were watching. In effect, it was a performance people had to re-imagine when they saw the work the next morning.”
